Eligibility for Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income

You May Be Eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Even If You Have never Worked.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program managed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that provides monthly financial support to individuals who are blind, aged 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability. This program also extends to children who are blind or have disabilities.

The income limits for SSI are $1,971 per month for individuals and $2,915 per month for couples. The asset limit is $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples. However, your primary residence and first vehicle are not counted towards the asset limit.

  • Shelter-related expenses: These grants can help with moving costs, security deposits, and more.

  • Repair or replacement of major appliances: These grants can help repair or replace essential household equipment.
  • Food for guide dog: A recurring grant for unemployed blind or deaf SSI recipients to purchase food for a guide dog.
